Group Members Feedback

Book Group 3 started in September and is now firmly established with 10 or so members from a variety of backgrounds with different life experiences. We are able to gather viewpoints from other perspectives than our own. Naturally, we do not always agree, but it would be very dull if we all said "That was very lovely", and then went home, wouldn't it? Many times, having read a book, someone will shed light on an area which I had missed, making the book more enjoyable to me. Some members have said, on occasion, that they have returned to the book after one of our sessions, and seen it in a different light.

We are all invited to suggest a title which we consider would be worth reading, the only stipulation being that the book is available in paperback at the present time. The Public Library is helpful in obtaining copies of books, given enough notice. The disadvantage there is that one must keep an eye on the date due for returning the book, and some of us prefer to keep it at our leisure. There are many bookshops nearby and these are particularly useful for the blockbuster type of novel; we have become more wary of books which are launched on to the market with much fanfare and publicity, the initial wave of which can boost sales so that there is a "best seller" ready made. Another method is to shop on-line. There is usually quick service, the books may be sold at a lower price and, in the case of second hand books, very cheaply. The last one I bought cost 1p! If the seller advertises a secondhand book "in good condition" then it will be so.

Each season has its own reason for reading an interesting book. At present, the days darken early and it is tempting to stay where it is warm and read. In the lighter months, at holiday time, a good book is an interesting companion.

So far up to Christmas, we have read Pompeii by Richard Harris, Dog Boy by Eva Horfnung, The Winter Ghosts by Kate Mosse, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. In December, Kirsten, our group leader will compile a list for next year, Jan. to May, based upon our votes for the various suggestions put forward. Mary K
